GRAND KNIGHT’S CORNER

In this, my first Lenten Grand Knight’s Corner, I’m  going to use Brother John Carter’s synopsis of how
we should spend Lent.  Thanks John, you say it so much better than I.

During Lent, let us take time to Feast on:

  • Gratitude

  • Forgiveness

  • Compassion

  • Hope

  • Commitment

  • Truth

  • and dwell on

  • The Mercy of God

  • Patience

And to Fast from:

  • Discontent

  • Anger

  • Bitterness

  • Self concern

  • Despair

  • Guilt

By feasting on the above positives, we can make Lent a time of growth.  May your Lent be so rewarding, that Easter and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ be the best ones you’ve ever experienced.

 Vivat Jesus
S/K Stewart McLamb, GK

MARCH 6 IS GOING TO BE A BUSY DAY for our Council members.  Our blood drive will be held in the PLC starting at eight am and continuing until noon.  On the same day, our Council has been invited to march in Morrison Plantation’s third annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.  Assembly will be at the club house on Montebello.  Plans are for the Fourth Degree to march in full regalia while other Council members will march wearing LAMB vests and distributing Tootsie Rolls.  Following the parade, a corned beef and cabbage luncheon will be served.  Also on the program will be Irish music and dancing.  It’s a tight fit, but those wishing to do both should get in the blood line as early as possible.

THE BLOOD DRIVE, SPONSORED BY THE KNIGHTS, is still in need of donors and volunteers to help. Initial sign-up will be after Masses on February 28. If you missed the signup, you can still donate or volunteer. If you’re interested in doing either, contact Brother Vern Voss (704-660-0922 or vernbv@aol.com)  Vern is substituting for Clayton Brown for this drive and he’d appreciate your help.

OUR HELP IS STILL NEEDED BY HOPE PARK although we already have donated $500 to help in its building.  Volunteers are needed to help build this outdoor play area.  They need 5,000 volunteers to build the park next to the Lowes YMCA.  They are VERY short of the number of volunteers needed to build this park from March 10 – 14.  Many people like to wait until the last minute to sign up, but there’s a need now to know now how many will be working and how many will  have to be fed.  Please go to www.buildhopepark.org and sign up to help.

THE MARCH 27 CHECKERS HOCKEY MATCH against Reading has been designated “Hero’s Night” and will honor members of the military, police, firemen and EMTs.  S/K Jim Kiger is heading up our Council’s participation by selling $10 tickets to the game to honor these heroes.  We’ll have a reserved section and the Checkers will accept cash, check or credit cards.  Joining with our Council in selling tickets are the Golden Corral, the American Legion and Richard’s Coffee Shop.  Brother Kiger expects about 450 tickets to be sold.  If you’re interested in attending, having the opportunity to say thanks to our heroes, contact him at papajimk@windstream.net or at 704/340-0281.

We’ll car pool from the church at 6 to downtown Charlotte.

MEMBERSHIP IS LAGGING BEHIND QUOTA and S/K Matt Reilly has asked for everyone to start asking prospective members about joining.  At the present time, our Council has exemplified five new members and has signed only two new insurance members.  This is against the State Supreme quota of 16 new members for the Council Year.  A First Degree Exemplification will be held during the April 12 social meeting and by giving the date this early, it will allow any new members to plan their respective schedules for their initiation.  Brother Reilly and Grand Knight S/K Stewart McLamb stressed that plenty of form 100s are available from them or from the Knights’ mailbox across from the sacristy.

MOTORCYCLE POKER RUN ON APRIL 10 will start at 10 and is being held in conjunction with the St. Therese parish family.  The “run” is open to bikes and cars and will cover an area east and west of I-77. Each participant will be required to go to designated sites, collecting a playing card from each location.  At the end of the “run”, those participants with the best poker hand win.  The whole program is to raise funds to battle cancer through this “Ride for the Cure”.   More details and entry fee information from GK Stewart McLamb at 866-553-6818 or stewartm@farnsworthlogistics.com.

OUR ANNUAL AUDIT OF COUNCIL FINANCES will take place next month.  Our elected trustees will go over all aspects of the finances and report their findings back to the Council.  Due to vacations and travel plans, the Grand Knight has appointed Bob Frohman and Matt Reilly to act in the place of regular trustees Gary Tadvick and Clayton Brown.

VINCE GRECO REPORTS THAT THE MAY 5 GOLF CLASSIC is moving ahead nicely.  He emphasizes though, that we still need sponsors and players.  We have received some income from a few sponsors and some merchants have given us products and/or service certificates that will be awarded after the buffet luncheon.  Prosciutto’s Italian restaurant of Cornelius will cater the luncheon and the Keffer Auto Group will offer a car as the Hole-in-One prize.  $90 entry fee includes green fees, a continental breakfast and lunch.  Tee-off time is nine o’clock with a four person captain’s choice.  Questions about sponsorships or the day in general can be directed to Brother Vince at 704/662-3930 (vagreco30@gmail.com;  Jack Madey at 704/662-0220 (madeyjack1@gmail.com); or Mark Daly at 704/987-4316 (restondaly@yahoo.com).  All net income will go to finance our charities for the coming year.

OUR FIRST 2010 LENTEN FISH FRY was a huge success.  Brother Hank Brzoska reported that 150 persons were served on Friday, February 19.  Those 150 included meals served to the priests of the parish and teen-agers who conducted the “Living Stations” in the sanctuary following the meal.  The $7 fish fry will be a regular Friday event for the balance of Lent except on Good Friday, April 2.  Hank invites all of you to join us for some really good fish, French fries, hushpuppies and cole slaw.  Coffee and tea are also available and the Faith Formation teens provide the dessert as a fund raiser.  Combined with the Stations of the Cross at 7, it all makes for a great evening for the family, friends and neighbors.

THE COUNCIL WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS on March 5.  As noted above, the Stations will be said following the fish fry.  Anyone who wants to take part in the praying of the Stations should contact the GK (866-553-6818 or stewartm@farnsworthlogistics.com.) We can use 14 Knights for this very special Lenten opportunity.

A CHANGE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED IN OUR SEMINARIAN SUPPORT.  The young man whom we have been supporting has decided to resign from the Diocesan study program and enter Belmont Abbey.  In an effort to continue our seminarian support, we will now support Mr. Casey Coleman who will be studying at St. Charles Borremeo Seminary.  Our support is $500 a year plus $100 that we receive from Supreme for the sponsorship.  Remember to include Casey in your prayers.
