My Brothers All:
Well the long awaited first business meeting of the calendar year has
finally taken place, and it’s time for me to report what has been
happening. When I looked back, I realized that we haven’t had a
business meeting since November. That’s quite a long time for us not to
have conducted any real business. We have really hit the road
running. Take a few minutes and catch up on what is going to be
happening at the council.
Vivat Jesus Ed Kane, Grand Knight
Bingo
The first major undertaking is Bingo. Tim Vogel will be chairing the
steering committee to get things moving.
Tim has started putting a committee together so that when we start, we
will be in compliance with the State of North Carolina and our expertise
in running a proper game will be acceptable with the players. If you can
help Tim out by serving on the committee, just give him a call.
Remember that this fund raising adventure will be long term (every
Thursday evening). In order for it to be a success, everyone will have
to commit a few hours each month or so.
We are looking to fill a lot of slots. We are planning to have 5 or 6
teams. Each team will consist of a minimum of 10 people. They can be
brother Knights or members of the Parish. A team will be comprised of
(2) door attendants/admissions, (4) floor monitors, (1 or 2) callers,
The balance to be Kitchen Crew and Concessions. The Kitchen crew will
report to the Kitchen Captain (KC) and everyone reports to the Team
Captain (TC). These five or six teams will rotate schedules throughout
the year. We will have a special website posted in a couple of weeks so
you can stay tuned with what’s going on with Bingo.
The more people that get involved, the less impact on everyone else. You
can contact Tim at 704-500-1834 or email
tim@caltim.com.
Blood
Drive
Recently, our blood drive chairman Jeff Warren stepped down due to
business commitments. Fortunately for us, Jim Hepler has agreed to head
up this very worthwhile activity. Blood Drives have been scheduled
for March 13, June 5, and October 23. Jim has already put up signs in
the church, but he is going to need some help on the morning of Saturday
March 13. If you can help out, please give Jim a call. If you
can’t help in setting up, you could always stop by and donate a quart or
so of your blood. We will only take a pint.
May
Race
Time is getting short. The May race is approaching and we will need a
lot of support and help. Tom Joy and I will be meeting with the
people at Lowe’s in the very near future. They have all new people at
the track, so this will definitely be a feeling out process. Dave Smith,
who has worked very hard at the track must step down due to his going
back to school. Tom, who knows all the ins and outs, is going to need
help. This will be a time consuming job, so we need someone who can
spend time on the phone and setting up schedules. You might even be able
to get out of driving assignments.
Saint
Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance
Mark your calendars! On Saturday, March 20, the council will be holding
a Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance. We have had several members
sign up to do the cooking, and Matt Reilly is making the arrangements
for music. Ted Benell is going to supervise the installation of the
dance floor. Tom Joy is in charge of ticket sales, which by the
way, are $20.00 each. Tom is going to need help after the weekend Masses
for ticket sales. Spend just a few minutes after Mass and help out with
ticket sales. It really won’t take up that much of your time. The
event will be open for the parish and other guests. Plan on spending an
enjoyable evening with fellow parishioners and friends.
Habitat
for
Humanities
We, as a council have been asked to help move a family from their
existing residence into a new home in Mooresville. From what I
understand, the family really has very little, so the move shouldn’t
take all that long. At the meeting we voted on renting a U-Haul
type truck, so that we can complete the move in one load. This will
relieve us from lining up several pick-up trucks that may or may not be
available for our use. No time has been given for the move, but I have
requested at least one week’s notice. If you would be available
some Saturday morning, (date unknown at this time) it would be
appreciated.
State
Raffle
I hope you all have noticed that enclosed with this newsletter, are a
few state raffle tickets. The cost is $5.00 each. What makes this
fund-raiser viable is the fact that we get to keep half of everything we
bring in. Lets get behind this effort and sell the tickets. They will be
for sale after Masses each weekend and also at the Saint Patrick’s Day
Dinner.
Knights
of the Month
It is a pleasure to name John Bigliardi, Knight of the Month for
January. I think we all know how much time John spends in the
kitchen preparing not only the food we consume at our meetings, but also
for the special events we have during the course of the year. Whenever
we have district, state, or other functions John has always been there
to prepare suitable food for the event.
It was not difficult to name our February recipient of the Knight of the
Month. To tell the truth, I wanted to name him several months ago, but
he said, “Why don’t you give it to someone else, they deserve it more
than me.” In my opinion, this individual exemplifies every thing that is
good in our Order.
This individual has never refused me, and I don’t believe many of us
have ever been refused either. So, in my own way, I want to say thank
you for every thing you have accomplished. God Bless You!, Ted Benell.
Donations
During the February meeting we voted to spend money for some very worthy
causes. First the council voted to give $1,000.00 to the Parish Building
Fund. We use the facilities at no cost to us. We felt it was only right
to give back to the Parish.
We also donated $1,000.00 to S.W.A.T. This money will be used to
purchase needed equipment for the kitchen. The women have spent many
dollars purchasing equipment for the kitchen, that we have no problem
using. Again we felt it was time to give back to these wonderful ladies.
Another mission within the Parish is RCIA. We had $500.00 built into the
budget for this ministry. When we were asked to help support the weekend
retreat the candidates are going to be attending, by donating to the
costs of the Retreat Master, we felt it was the right thing to do. These
costs will total an additional $300.00 to money already in the budget.
We also sent a $500.00 donation to our new seminarian, Mr. Fred Werth.
We have already received a beautiful letter from him thanking us for the
donation. Remember that we will get $100.00 back from Supreme for
the donation.
Ad
Books
Many parishioners and others have asked us if we were going to be
selling ad books again. Through the efforts of Paul Mitchell, we have
found a supplier.
These books will be on sale shortly for $10.00 each. They are different
from the past books, but we feel they will be well received by the
public. Again, please give your support to this fund-raising effort.
Odds
and
Ends
There are several other events that are planned for the immediate
future. First, we will be having a Memorial Mass for William Reilly,
grandson of Brother Phil Reilly. William was 19 years old when he passed
away from the effects of Leukemia. I have spoken to Fr. Joe about saying
the Mass.
We felt it might be appropriate to have the Mass on a Monday evening.
Fr. will be the celebrant and will make arrangements for a cantor. If we
could do it prior to a social meeting, we could then have a pot luck
dinner at the PLC. I’ll let you know how we progress.
We will be dedicating both the American and Papal flags on a Sunday in
the near future prior to the 10:15 Mass. Again the announcement will be
in the bulletin.
Keep the night of April 12 open. This will be a social meeting that we
are going to open to the parish.
We will hold a fraternal benefits night. Dave Wellmon, our
representative, will be presenting the program. Our thoughts are that by
opening the meeting up we may get interest from the younger parishioners
who may be starting a family and might have interests in the Knight’s
Fraternal Benefit Program.
From what I hear, John Bigliardi will be doing something special.
New
Members
At our last social meeting held on February 9 we brought three new
members into the council.
Let us welcome Fr. Joe Kappes SJ, who will be our new chaplain. Also,
welcome Jeffrey Miller and
Vincent Schweickert.
In Our Prayers
We learned recently that Brother Amedee Norves broke his ankle. He is
recovering at home, but from what we hear, he could use some visitors.
Please call before you just drop over. We also want to remember Brother
Paul Cunningham and Marion Reilly in our prayers
