My Brothers All:
Several times during the past Columbian year we, as a council have
not found the time to at least recite one decade of the Rosary at
the close of our meeting. Supreme has asked us to set a portion of
time at each business meeting to perform this devotion to Our
Blessed Mother. It is certainly the least we can do.
During the April business meeting I suggested that we meet in the
Church at 7:00 p.m. prior to our regularly scheduled meetings and
say the Rosary together as a council. My suggestion was met with a
great deal of enthusiasm and input. May is the month of Our Blessed
Mother, so it is indeed appropriate that we start this devotion
during this special time. I was asked if other people could join
us. My answer was, absolutely. What a great opportunity for us to
not only honor the Mother of Our Lord, but to invite everyone to
participate in this devotion with us. So mark your calendars,
starting Monday May 24, we will hold our first Rosary devotion with
the recitation of the Joyful Mysteries starting at 7:00 p.m.
BINGO:
The committee has been holding weekly meetings preparing for the
start of Bingo operations currently scheduled to begin on Thursday
August 5. The committee has attended other games in the area to
familiarize themselves with any contingencies that may arise.
During the meeting a motion was made to expend money not to exceed
$6,000.00 for the purchase of the necessary equipment and supplies
for the start of our endeavors. As was discussed, the committee has
located good serviceable “pre-owned” equipment that must be brought
in from the St. Louis area. With this purchase, the council was
able to save several thousand dollars. We have also spoken to
Robert Harrison, Director of Facilities, and made arrangements to
store all of our equipment within the parish Life Center.
Everything seems to be on schedule. We only need you for this to be
a really great success. Please volunteer your time and join the
team.
BUDGET:
Thanks to the hard work of Tom Joy and Ted Benell a proposed budget
was introduced at the April meeting. Copies were handed out to all
in attendance. Please review this document and be prepared to
discuss it at the May meeting. The budget, with any changes, will
be introduced at this meeting and will be voted on in June.
NOMINATIONS OF OFFICERS:
Nominations of officers for the upcoming Columbian year were
discussed. From the initial response, it would appear that the
current slate of officers would be running unopposed. Think about
becoming involved in the council. We still need members to be
active in the various committees as either members or chairmen.
Time is running short. The new Columbian year starts in July. In
order to keep the momentum going, WE NEED A FEW GOOD MEN.
RACE:
Tom Joy gave us an update on the status of the race signup sheets.
As of this writing, Tom has advised me that things are going
relatively well. We still need help. This is a great opportunity
for us to raise money for the many charities we support. If you
have not signed up to drive, please do so. We need your help! Don’t
forget we have the new job of “Tram Director.” If you can’t drive,
consider being a tram director. Same rate of pay, and same hours.
Sit on the tram, announce the stops and mix with the people.
Remember to call Tom Joy and sign up to help out.
SPANISH MINISTRY:
The question was, “what should we do next?” We have had some very
successful events such as the Spaghetti Dinner, Saint Patrick’s Day
Dinner, and most recently the Lenten Fish Fries. Our parish is
experiencing a growth with the Spanish community. We have a great
opportunity to include these brothers and sisters in the activities
we sponsor and support. As you all know, we have been very
fortunate to work with the Diocese of Charlotte Spanish Youth
Ministry by providing breakfast during their retreats. Brother Paul
Mitchell is working with the Spanish Ministry in bringing the
Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to our parish. While
plans are still being developed the Knights will be an integral
part of the devotion. At the last meeting we discussed having a
Spanish Festival. Paul has talked with members of the Spanish
community and they were very responsive. They have obtained
permission from Fr. Jerry to hold an event on Saturday, August 21.
This will not be a fund raising event for the Knights. We will be
there to assist in any way we can. We have the experience,
knowledge, and the equipment to make the event a complete success.
By getting involved, who knows we may get some good and needed new
members for our council.
SCHOLARSHIP:
Do you know of anyone in the council that has a child in need of a
scholarship? We have applications for our annual Danielle Bigliardi
Harper and Micayla Harper Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is
open to qualified applicants who are either attending college,
Catholic High Schools, or certified trade schools. If you are
interested, please call Ed Kane for an application.
CONVENTION:
Grand Knight Ed Kane and Deputy Grand Knight Ken Fusaro will be
attending the annual convention in Winston Salem the weekend of May
13 thru 15. I would like to thank Laurel Koenders for her
much-needed assistance in putting a scrapbook together. In my
opinion she did a terrific job. The scrapbook was turned into State
Warden Greg Kent on Good Friday. Our book will be judged with the
other entries at the convention. I will bring it back at the
conclusion of the convention and put it on display for all to view.
I think we will be in line for a few awards during the convention.
We all worked very hard this past year, and even if we don’t get
any state recognition, I know what you have all contributed, and I
certainly appreciate all your efforts.
SPECIAL THANKS:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Clayton Brown, Ted
Benell and Wesley Weaver for building the storage bins in the
basement of the Parish Life Center. These storage areas will be
allocated to various ministries within the parish. The Knights were
given a space so that we can properly store our bingo supplies and
some equipment from our current space, which if haven’t looked
lately, is overflowing.
IN OUR PRAYERS:
At the meeting Monday night we were advised the Marion Reilly has
been in an intensive care unit in Spokane Washington. According to
Clayton Brown, she became ill during a vacation with Matt to the
western United States. The most recent news has been positive.
Marion is eating on her own and is gaining strength.
Tim Vogel has reported that his wife Catherine has undergone
successful surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in
Winston Salem. Catherine must still undergo a series of radiation
and chemo treatments.
Also please, keep George Baily Jr, Phil Reilly and Irv Hoechner in
our prayers.
