Last night prior to conducting our regular business
meeting, several brother Knights and members of the parish assembled
in the Sanctuary to recite the Rosary. We began with remembering those
who are in need of our prayers. As we were saying the Joyful
Mysteries, you could hear more and more voices as people came in to
join us. For me, it was a completely satisfying experience. May is the
month of Our Blessed Mother, and it was truly a great time to initiate
our monthly devotion to the Mother of Our Lord.
Prior to our monthly business meetings, which are held on the fourth
Monday of each month in case you have forgotten, we will meet in the
Sanctuary for the recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. In June, we
will recite the Sorrowful Mysteries. Come and join us.
GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT
As we draw near the end of our Columbian year, we have
the opportunity to select a new slate of officers and create a budget
for the upcoming year. We started the process in April with the
nomination of officers and the presentation of a proposed budget. You
were asked to review the nominations and budget and be prepared to
discuss them at the May meeting. In addition to the existing slate,
Sir Knight Chris Winters has been nominated for the position of
Advocate and Brother Jim Hepler has been nominated for the position of
Warden. At the June meeting we will hold an election of officers. We
will also discuss the budget, adjust it where necessary and vote on
its acceptance.
I can’t stress enough how important it is that we have officers and a
budget in place for the beginning of the Columbian year. It is your
duty to be present at the meeting and express your views. Get involved
with the process so that we can all be a part of the council and
continue to help the Parish and community through our charitable work.
The proposed slate of officers is as follows:
Grand Knight: Ed Kane, Deputy Grand Knight: Ken Fusaro, Chancellor:
Tim Vogel, Recorder: Clayton Brown, Financial Secretary: Steve Wise,
Treasurer: Noel Nadol, Advocate: Chris Winters, Warden: Jim Hepler,
Inside Guard: Paul Fabio, Outside Guard: Amedee Norvez, Trustee: One
Year Will Camagna, Trustee: Two Years Matt Reilly, Trustee: Three
Years Dave Smith, Chaplain: Fr. Joe Kappas SJ.
There will be copies of the proposed budget at the next meeting for
your review. There will be a period for discussion, but a vote with
any changes will be held.
INSURANCE
We have received our application for the renewal of
our liability insurance. Apparently our agent is changing the
insurance carrier, so the price for our new coverage will be prorated
for the balance of the calendar year 2004. I have requested the Board
of Trustees to look over the paperwork and report back to the
membership. In addition the State Council has offered a liability
insurance package. As of this writing, we have not received answers to
our many questions. I have requested that Brother Bob Daigler contact
State Advocate Dave Jones to give a presentation of the State program
at our regularly scheduled June social meeting, which will be held on
Monday June 14 at 7:30 p.m.
RACE
Well, we are in the second week of the May race
schedule. From all accounts, the first week was a great success. All
the shifts were covered even if several members had problems getting
to the track because of traffic. I would like to thank Brother Tom Joy
for the outstanding job he has done in coordinating the scheduling and
most importantly interacting with the raceway staff. We will have a
detailed report for the next edition of the newsletter. I would be
remiss if I didn’t thank all the members of the council who have
participated in this, our largest fund raising event.
BINGO
The clock is ticking. We are getting closer to our
start up date. We have committed to the purchase of equipment. We only
have to find a way to get it transported from Illinois. The license
procedure has been held up because we have to locate a copy of our
bylaws. Once we locate them, we will be able to obtain a tax-exempt
certificate from the North Carolina Department of Revenue and proceed
with the application process. Remember, this activity will only be a
success if we all get involved and support it. Call Brother Tim Vogel
or Brother Paul Mitchell and tell them YOU WILL COMMIT THE TIME.
BLOOD DRIVE
The council will be holding a blood drive on Saturday
June 5 starting at 8:00 a.m. Brother Jim Hepler is our chairman. Our
goal is to have 40 pints of blood donated. If you can help out with
registrations or are willing to part with a little blood, please get
in touch with Jim.
CONVENTION
Well to say the least, it was a very interesting
weekend at the North Carolina State Convention which was held in
Winston Salem. The current officers were re elected and the state
budget was passed. A vote to raise the state per capita tax was
defeated by the attending delegates. Taking money from the state
raffle profits will make up any shortfall in state revenues.
Congratulations to our Brothers at Saint Mark’s! They walked away with
virtually every award possible in our class. They really did a great
job this past Columbian year. As a whole, our district did very well;
Holy Spirit, Denver, St. Mark’s, Huntersville and our council all won
Distinguished Council Awards. Without all of your efforts, this past
year could not have been a success. Thanks to each and every one of
you for your support and hard work.
SECOND AND THIRD DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATIONS
While I was at the convention, state representatives
approached me about holding a second and third degree exemplification.
Fr. Jerry has given his permission, so the date is set. The
second-degree registration will be at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November
6. The degree will be held in the overflow room in the main church at
10:00 a.m. Registration for the third degree will be at 11:00 a.m. The
degree will start at 12 noon in the PLC. There will be a luncheon at
the conclusion of the degree in the PLC. We will be needing members to
help out with the registrations and assisting the degree teams. We
will also need members to help out with the preparation and serving
the food. Then, of course, there is the clean up. This will be a great
opportunity for us to show our stuff. More later.
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
(Danielle Bigliardi Harper and Micayla Harper Memorial
Scholarship)
Scholarship applications are available. Remember, any immediate family
member of a member of the council is eligible. Call Matt Reilly for
more information and the application. The applicant doesn’t have to be
going to a four year college to be eligible. Students going to
Catholic primary or secondary schools, technical schools, or community
colleges are also able to apply for the scholarship. The award is
tentatively scheduled to be distributed during the month of July.
SPANISH FESTIVAL
What started out to be a getting to know you project
has really grown. Thanks to the efforts of Brother Paul Mitchell and
his counterparts within the Spanish Community we are going to have a
festival. The date is Saturday, August 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
There will be booths set up from various Central and South American
countries. Food will be offered and the people manning the booths will
be dressed accordingly. There will be music, singing and dancing. The
committee would like to include North American Cuisine. Any thoughts
as to what we could do? This promises to be a wonderful time and a
good opportunity to meet and really get to know our Spanish brothers
and sisters, who are part of our parish life community.
IN OUR PRAYERS
We have been asked to keep the following people in our
prayers: George Baily Jr., Phil Reilly, Bill Pfeifer, Marion Reilly,
Catherine Vogel, Sherry Hill, Ted Benell’s daughter, and Robert
Harrison.
