Happy May to you, the beginning of Spring and the month devoted to our Heavenly Mother, Mary. Also, May is the month we pause to honor our earthly Mothers. So, we wish a happy Mother’s Day to all of our Mothers, and especially to those ladies who mean so much to our Council – the wives of our Council brothers, those who work beside us at our various functions, helping to make our efforts as successful as they are. Ladies, you are truly special!

“Bring flowers of the fairest, bring flowers of the rarest” is a refrain that is repeated every May during the annual crowning of the Blessed Virgin as Queen of Heaven. For those of us who grew up attending Catholic school, that melodious refrain is engrained in our memory, along with all the memories of the Church of our early growth. I’m not sure how often today’s children participate in the Crowning of Mary during May, but the memory of that ceremony brings to mind the promises, we, as Knights, have made to honor Mary as the Queen of the Knights.

These promises include our devotion to the rosary of Mary and our resolve to carry and pray the rosary as often as we can. May I suggest to each of you to attend our K of C rosary recitation on the fourth Monday of each month just prior to our business meeting. The recitation begins at 7, followed by the meeting at 7:30.

My congratulations to our new members who were initiated last month. I look forward to watching your growth into the advanced degrees of the Order as well as your participation in our Council’s various events.

The June 12 social meeting promises to be a very special get-together. During the meeting, we will award the Council’s thee $500 college scholarships to some well-deserving, graduating seniors from area high schools. In addition, some equally deserved, and, in some cases, overdue awards, will be presented to Council brothers for their outstanding work during the past year.

All Council members and their wives are invited to attend. Your presence will meaningful to all the honorees, both students and fellow members of the Council. Refreshment and food will be served.

It was planned that the Knights would assist in re-carpeting the sanctuary by removing and stacking all of the pews prior to the laying of the new carpet. After the carpet was installed, we were to have replaced all of the pews. After taking a close look at the mechanics of the operation, it was decided to let the pros do the job. In an effort to help offset the cost of the operation, the Council elected to contribute $5,000 to the overall job. This is the amount that the contractor estimated that it would cost to have his crew do the removal and replacement of the pews.

In addition to our gift, the ladies’ SWAT team contributed a like amount to help defray the overall cost of the carpet installation

Greg Benjock presented the Council with a summary of our Lenten Fish Frys. According to his records, we served 874 diners during the six Fridays of Lent. Our biggest night was the parish “family night” when we served 293. Income from this night was shared with the RCIA program, members of which served alongside us. Total profit for the six weeks amounted to over $2,200. Thanks to our brothers and their wives who helped set-up, cooked, served and cleaned-up.

A first degree initiation will be held on May 8. In addition to our own new members, there will members from St. Mark’s who will go through the initiation. If you have anyone who is interested in joining the Knights, now is the opportune time to have them complete their form 100. Upon completion, get the form to Matt Riley as soon as possible so it can be processed.

We’ve been asked to do some touch-up painting around the church property. According to Ed Kane, PGK and State Deputy, the painting will involve the church doors and the shed behind the church. A date has not been determined for the work.

We’re still contesting Lowe’s decision to withhold $1,171 from the payments for our October bus-driving last year. An attorney has mailed a letter to the head of the speedway outlining our position. Previous letters were sent to management officials at the Speedway. It is felt that writing to the President will initiate some action.
