may 2008 newsletterGRAND KNIGHT'S CORNER Brothers, it was good to see so many of you at this month's business meeting. Please join me in congratulating Vince Greco and his team on a great golf tournament. They all did an excellent job and we appreciate all of the time and effort they and your wives put into planning and hosting the tournament. Remember that this is Mary's month. As the patroness of the United States, we should turn to her, especially through her rosary, asking her intercession for the end of the Iraq war and peace throughout the world. We mentioned all that are in need of prayers during the meeting. It is so very important that we remember to pray for each other. If you think about it, prayer is all that we have. Do we really ever own anything, no. We are stewards of what God has provided. We use items for a while; they wear out, are sold, passed on or consumed. We really do not truly own anything; we purchase the right to use things. I do not mean to go too deep on this, but it is sad to hear of those who suffer. When the chips are down where do we turn -- to God. Let's remember to pray to God in the good times also thanking him for all that He has done, and is doing, for us and our families. I have been deeply touched by so many of you. You are an inspiration to me and you give me joy in my life. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to seeing you at next month's meetings. Don't forget we meet on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. The second Monday is our social meeting and the fourth is our business meeting. Brother in Christ, Gary Tadvick , GK REGIONAL DISTRICT DIRECTOR ATTENDS APRIL MEETING Vincent Cerullo joined us for our April 21 meeting. In his comments, he noted that our Council is in an excellent position to attain Double Star Council status this year. As with attaining Star Council, Double Star is based on membership attainment, insurance sales and meeting other goals as set by Supreme. However, the Double Star honor goes to those councils that exceed those goals. According to Brother Cerullo, we are in an excellent position to attain this honor, one of the very few to do so in North Carolina. Brother Cerullo also brought news that our former Grand Knight, Ken Fusaro is still very ill and is holding his own. We are all asked to remember Brother Fusaro in our prayers. GOLF Golf is the big word around the Council this month. Vince Greco and his golf group put together a very successful golf classic on April 23 at the Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville that netted $5,119 for the Council. The money will be used to support the various charities that we will be supporting during the next year. Chief sponsor of the event was Pedulla Excavating and Paving. Mickey Pedulla is a member of 7406 and although he couldn't attend the tournament, his son, Dominic, represented him. A total of 76 golfers played the 18 hole course and the general comments were that it was a terrific tournament and many said they looked forward to playing again next year in the Second Annual 7406 Golf Classic. Our Knights didn't take first place, but Sir Dave Koenders' foursome came in second. DGK Stewart McLamb won the putting contest and took home a new Nike putter. According to Brother Vince, 19 members of 7406 and 12 parishioners participated in making the event a success, either as players or volunteers in putting the tournament together. In his report to the Council during the April business meeting, Vince acknowledged the help from his committee members. They included his wife Frannie, Jack and Bernie Madey, Sue and Mark Daly, Connie and Jim Evans, June and Hank Broszka, and Bob Collins. Also volunteering were Russ Crim, Stewart McLamb and the beer cart drivers, Ed Kane and Bob Sheehe. It was reported they were the two most popular people on the course. NEW MEMBERS On April 21, a First Degree Exemplification was held wherein six new members were added to the Council. New Knights are Richard Arena, Steven Baughman, Roger Johnson III, Aldo Martinez, Jerry Pickrel and Mark Wallace. Welcome to the Council and the Knights of Columbus, gentlemen - we look forward to getting to know each of you and working with you to make our Council one of the best. FIRST DEGREE Another First Degree Exemplification will be held on May 12 or 26 . Currently, we have five gentlemen waiting to be initiated. Brother Mayer is responsible for the monthly pancake breakfast plus being active in other Council activities. April Knight of the Month honors went to Jack Madey for his work as the Council Secretary, his work on the golf committee and as a captain for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen volunteers. Family of the Month honors went to Mark Daly and his wife Sue for their work in the Council including directing LAMB for the past three years, plus parish and outside activities including the Mooresville Soup Kitchen and the Mooresville Probus Club. LAMB Pat D'Andrea, new director of LAMB reported that this year's LAMB will be held on September 12-14 and 19-21. He has asked for volunteers to help him in managing this year's program due to his ongoing work schedule which includes working weekends. WALK FOR LIFE Brother and Deputy Grand Knight Sir Stewart McLamb brought the Council up to date on the annual Walk for Life, scheduled for May 30 at Mooresville High School. The Walk is a fund raising event for the American Cancer Society, and Steward said a number of cancer survivors will be at the night-long event. He asked the Council members to participate by volunteering to help in several areas where manpower is needed. If you’re interested in helping, contact Brother McLamb (stewartm@corencorp.com). As a reminder, the Council has contributed $500 to this cause. If you can’t volunteer your help, a check made out to Walk for Life or the American Cancer Society will be a big help. Send your checks to Stewart at 264 Mallard Way, Mooresville, 28117 K OF C SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Sir Matt Reilly reminded the Council members of our annual scholarship program, awarded to graduating seniors whose fathers are members in good standing with the Knights.
