During our June social meeting, I had the great pleasure to make awards to several brother Knights who were being recognized for their efforts on behalf of the Council and the Church. The Knight of the Year award went to Ed Kane, our Past Grand Knight, who is now serving as District Deputy. It would be tough to find a parish KofC activity where Ed is not present, offering his experience and hands on help. He led the Council as Grand Knight for three years and we are where we are today because of his leadership and work.

Family of the Year award went to Grace and Chris Winters. They were recognized for having given so much to the parish and the Council during the past year. Like our Knight of the Year recipient, the Winters could always be found contributing their time and effort to activities around St. Therese.

A special award went to Laurel and Dave Koenders for their seven years of work on LAMB. Although Dave was the one who did the out front work, we recognized the important part that his wife played. As the award noted, Laurel and Dave’s time devoted to LAMB brought a tremendous amount of happiness to a great many of those who are the “Least Among My Brethren”.

Another highlight of the evening was the awarding of $500 scholarships to three young people as they begin their college careers. The scholarships are given in memory of John Bagliardi’s daughter and it was a pleasure to see John return to help in presenting the awards. He was assisted by “Skip” Reilly in acknowledging Scott Madeiro, Suzanne Blocke and John’s granddaughter Stacey as this year’s winners.

A special monetary award was given to Jim Atkinson in recognition of his becoming a permanent deacon, capping eight years of study. Jim’s also a 40 year member of the Knights. Jim has been assigned to Holy Spirit Church in Denver as its permanent Deacon.

All in all, it was a wonderful evening for our Council. Amadee Norvez, Stewart McLamb. Ted Bennel and their kitchen crew put together a great Italian feast for the 65 brothers and their wives who attended. Those receiving the honors certainly deserved them and I want to thank each of them, and to all the active Knights, for making my job as Grand Knight rewarding.

MONEY NEEDS OF THE COUNCIL
Our council’s strength in generosity is directly related to the strength of our treasury. This year, we lost the $6,000-$8,000 income to our treasury from the Lowes’ Motor Speedway bus and tram driving venue. We heavily depended upon that income to fund our summer and fall charity programs.

So, it’s clear we must identify new sources of income to the council this year. We must look for opportunities that raise thousands of dollars in a relatively short period of time. We need something that we can grow into and depend upon for years to come. We worked with the speedway for more than 7 years and now we need some new revenue streams to replace Lowes’.

Brother Chris Baker will heading up an effort to raffle off a new car or SUV plus a trailer as one way to raise money. Mark Daly will be in touch with St. Matthew’s Council concerning helping staff refreshment booths at Bobcats Arena. These two efforts could easily replace the Lowe’s loss, but, as usual, it’s going to take participation from members of the Council.

In regards to our disagreement with the Speedway, a possible settlement is on the horizon. However, it seems that our long, and profitable, relationship with Lowe’s has come to a screeching end. The Council Trustees will keep us informed.

UPDATE ON FATHER BILL
After seven days in the hospital and three weeks of rehab for a broken pelvis, he’s walking with the aid of a walker and cane and antsy to get back to work. Father Bill’s at home. Cards can be sent to him care of the parish office.

WE GOOFED!!
In the June Knightline, we should have noted that the “Donuts with the Knights” program would not be held the third Sunday of June. What we should have said was it would not be held in June, July or August. Our apologies, but either way, Brother Jack Madey can still use volunteers beginning in September. Time is no more than two or three hours on the third Sunday of the month and the hours can be fitted around your Mass time. Contact Jack at jfmadey@alltel.net  or 704-662-0220.

With our current efforts to update e-mail addresses for all Council members, we hope to be delivering Knightline to almost all brothers by e-mail in the very near future.

THE PARISH LIFE CENTER KITCHEN
With all the use it gets, the PLC kitchen is in need of a good, thorough cleaning. The Council and the SWAT ladies are planning on going together to hire a commercial cleaning company to give the kitchen a good going-over. According to current plans the commercial cleaning will be done twice a year with the costs being split between the Knights and SWAT. This still means, though, that it’s every group’s responsibility that uses the kitchen to leave it a little cleaner than how it was found.
