Grand Knights Report
My Brothers All:
To say the least, August has been a very interesting month. From the semi-annual audit report to the repairs of the sheet rock in the church, many of us have been kept very busy.
There is not enough room in this newsletter to thank all of you for the continuing support you have given to the council.
We started off the month at our social meeting. If you didn’t attend the meeting and ensuing social gathering, you really missed a good time. As advertised, we were able to donate $1,600.00 to Father Jerry for the building fund. This money was from the proceeds of the Ad Book fundraiser.
In addition, we gave a $500.00 scholarship to Theresa Domain in memory of John Bigliardi’s daughter and granddaughter.
Theresa was not able to be with us because of a work commitment but, her father Joe, a member of the council, accepted the award on her behalf. Theresa sent her thanks and looks forward to the day that she can come to a meeting and let us know how she is using her scholarship. We also made donations to Catherine’s House at Belmont Abbey, and to Catholic Social Services.
The last donation was to the state golf tournament. We will be sponsoring a tee or green. The proceeds of this event support Operation Lamb.
After the very brief formal business, those in attendance were treated to a wonderful assortment of appetizers, fresh fruit, and canapes. Beverages of beer, wine, soft drinks, tea and coffee were also present in sufficient quantities. Many thanks to John Bigliardi and Amedee Norvez for their preparation and serving skills, and also to those who stayed to clean up.
I must say that the evening was highlighted by the presence of many wives who apparently enjoyed themselves listening to music that was provided by Tim Vogel, and the CDs that were furnished by Ted Bennel.
I was very pleased by the comments from several of the women regarding getting more involved in other council activities.
Council Insurance
As most of you know, the question about insurance has been at the top of our list. It has become apparent that we have been driving the buses and trams at Lowe’s Motor Speedway without the benefit of insurance. We have been in constant contact with Lowe’s to resolve this issue. We have contacted various companies in order to get prices for coverage, but it is becoming clear that if we can find a carrier, the costs would be prohibitive. Let’s hope that Lowe's will come through and give us coverage, so that we can continue with this fundraising effort.
Our council liability insurance is being processed and should be in place very shortly.
Degrees
We will be holding a first-degree exemplification on Monday September 8. Currently we have five men entering the order on that day. The degree is being held prior to our social meeting, so please plan on attending.
Saturday September 13 there will be second and third degree exemplifications being held at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 8015 Ballantyne Commons Pkwy., Charlotte. Every member of the first degree should make the attempt to continue their journey in knighthood by becoming 2nd and 3rd degree members. Deputy Grand Knight Ken Fusaro is coordinating transportation and the events of the day. Give Ken a call at 828-478-9735.
Saturday October 18th the exemplification of the 4th degree will be held in Charlotte. Currently, we have four 3rd degree members who will be taking the honor. There is still time left to get your application in. Time is running short. If you are interested, call Steve Wise for information.
Upcoming Events
Check your calendars! During the weekend of September 20 and 21 the Parish Stewardship commission will be holding a fair. DGK Ken Fusaro is formalizing a list of brothers who will be available after the masses to man a table in the Parish Life Center to hand out brochures and answer questions about the Knights of Columbus.
On the weekend of September 27 and 28, we will be conducting our phase one of the Carolina Blitz. During this weekend we will have a very visible presence at all the masses. The 4th degree will be processing in full regalia. We need your help to hand out brochures after all the masses. It will only take a few minutes of your time. Please contact DGK Ken Fusaro and let him know about your availability.
The newly renewed spaghetti dinner will be held on Saturday November 1, 2003. This promises to be a great event. The council spared no expense to obtain the services of that world-renowned chef, Bill Muccio. The list of assistant chefs is growing by the day. We will be starting the ticket sales shortly. From what I hear, the menu will include salad, spaghetti, meatballs, both hot and sweet sausage, real Italian bread, dessert, wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee, and tea. I probably forgot something, maybe a 50/50.
We have been asked by the Crafty Ladies to help them out with their Christmas Bazaar, which is being held on Friday and Saturday November 14 and 15. We will be hosting breakfast and lunch both days. We get to keep the entire profit. They only asked that we serve their members at no cost.
In addition, we are going to have a booth. That’s right, we are going to be selling Christmas Cards.
Not just any cards, but those from the Knights of Columbus Squires. It promises to be a great time. Get involved. If you can’t work, come anyway and join us for breakfast or lunch, visit the bazaar, and most importantly buy your Christmas cards from the Knights.
A special thanks to Matt Reilly for heading up the Christmas card fundraiser.
The pancake breakfast continues to be a great success. Our thanks go out to Don Mayer and his worthy staff for a job well done. Come out and enjoy a great breakfast every first Sunday of the month, after the 8:30 Mass.
Building Committee
During the Board of Trustees meeting held on August 23, Brothers Bill Hanagan and Paul Mitchell made a presentation on the progress that has been made by their committee. The board was very impressed by what was presented and thanked the members for their efforts. Progress is being made. We will have a final report and recommendations for the entire membership at the November meeting.
State of the Council
The budget has been passed. If we are to participate in the many activities we have agreed on, we will have to raise the necessary funds. We stand to lose the most important fundraiser we have, Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Without that revenue, we must come up with alternative events to support our charitable activities. This means we must all roll up our sleeves and get involved. Many of us lead very busy lives. We should all thank God for the many blessings He has given us. God doesn’t ask us to do anything beyond our abilities or capabilities. All of us are in a position to help out a little. I only ask you to think about what you have, and how you can give something in return in time and talents.
Church Repairs
During the past several weeks the water damage to the sheet rock in the sanctuary has been addressed. Our council had been approached to assist in the repairs. "THE USUAL SUSPECTS were rounded up, and work commenced. As of this writing, the majority of phase one is complete. A project, that if accomplished by outside contractors probably would have cost many thousands of dollars, was held to under $100.00. Granted that was for material, but those who joined the effort got a lot out of it. Thanks to Ted Benell, Frank Schaffer, Don Coan, Wesley Weaver, and Jim Richart for all the time and talents you expended to the Parish on this project.
