august 2006 newsletterFROM THE GRAND KNIGHTWe’ll celebrate the formal installation of officers for the Council Year on August 14. A social will follow the installation with wives and families invited. Vince Greco reports that he talked with Father Bill at the Velvet Hammer on July 19. Father Bill was enjoying a lunch with friends from Maryland who were helping him celebrate his birthday. Brother Vince said Father Bill looked great and he still had that “twinkle” in his eye. He is still walking with a cane and no word yet when he will again be on the altar to greet us “fellow planetary travelers”. Father Bill told Vince that Father Jim had also fallen in almost the same place at the health club they both frequent. Father Jim fared a little better, incurring only a hurt and bruised arm. Brother Mark Daly reports that the annual LAMB program is starting to take shape. The dates are September 22, 23, 24 and 29 and 30. At the present time, only Wal-Mart and Harris-Teeter have “signed up” for this year’s collections. Bloom, a new entry last year, is a strong possibility for one day only and Lowes Food Stores have not yet committed. Corporate policy is dictating when, if and how often Bloom (a part of Food Lion) and Lowes can participate. Mark will be contacting the new owners of the former Bi-Lo store on Rte. 150 to see if they will allow us to collect in front of the store. A state award was given to our Council for last year’s collections which exceeded our goal by 5.5%. As initially reported in the July 23 bulletin, our Council will be forming a Columbian Squires Circle in the fall. The program offers young men the opportunity to develop leadership potential through spiritual, service and membership activities. Dave Conklin and Gary Tadvick are spearheading the formation of the Circle along with Stewart McLamb, Bill Muccio and Chris Baker. All five will act as Counselors. Chaplain for the Circle will be Father Joe. They’ll be looking for additional Knight assistance in “selling” the program to the young men of the parish. The Columbian Circle is open to all young men ages of 11 to 17. The official drive will start in October with a social for interested teens and their parents. Brother Gary emphasized that it’s not too early for all Brother Knights to begin talking with eligible individuals. The Council has approved the supplying of seed money to help get the Circle up and running. Contact Dave at 704/664-7762 or dconklin@sainttherese.net for further information. Matt Reilly has turned over the Membership responsibilities to Chris Baker, effective immediately. On the membership front, there will be a state-wide membership blitz October 7 and 8. Get your form 100s ready! Chris can be contacted at chris.g.baker@wachovia.com or phone him at 704-662-8268. We finally have settled with the Speedway in our disagreement of unpaid monies from last year. We settled for $850 against our claim of a little more $1,100. This settlement saved us from going to court and its incurred costs. Kudos to Chris Maureillo for his legal expertise in bringing this to a conclusion.
