august 2008 newsletterGRAND KNIGHT'S CORNER Brothers, we are off to a good start for our new fraternal year. We will be discussing RATI (Room at the Inn) for expectant mothers during our coming meetings. Prayerfully consider supporting RATI. We will be deciding on what we will do financially as a council for them during the coming months. Because of all of the presentations, I forgot to mention the Knight of the Month for July and Family of the Month for July. We will present these awards during our next business meeting. I will keep my comments short this month but leave you with a couple of thoughts from Pope John Paul II: "Peace is not just the absence of war. Like a cathedral, peace must be constructed patiently and with unshakable faith. The only way to peace is forgiveness. To accept and give forgiveness makes possible a new quality of rapport between men, interrupts the spiral of hatred and revenge and breaks the chains of evil which bind the hearts of rivals." And, he continued, "The truth is not always the same as the majority decision." God Bless you all. THIRD DEGREE A Third Degree exemplification will be held at St. Therese on October 11. All who are currently Second Degree Knights are urged to make every effort to attend this exemplification on their road to full Knighthood. For information and details, contact Ed Kane or Skip Reilly (skma39@windstream.net) . In a new ruling by Supreme, each exemplification must take part on individual days. Therefore, one cannot take more than one degree on any one day. SCHOLARSHIP BENEFIT & PICNIC Brad Baity was one of the firemen killed in the Charleston furniture warehouse fire last year. A member of the Mooresville Fire Department, 37 year old Brad went to Charleston to help fight the multi-alarm fire. A U.S. Marine veteran, he was very active in his church and left behind a wife and two children Chris Baker (chrisgbaker@alltel.net) is serving on the committee to make this scholarship benefit a success. It is scheduled at the Carrigan Farms of route 150 for Thursday evening, August 21 from 5-9 pm. Cost is $6.50 per adult, $5.50 for children and each family is asked to bring a dessert to share. Scholarships will be awarded to graduating Mooresville High School seniors who exemplify all that Brad represented in his life. Chris can also be contacted at his phone (704) 806-8143) SQUIRES Stewart McLamb has announced that a recruiting program for the Squires was to have been held on October 3. It was planned that the program would be an outing on Lake Norman followed by a cookout on one of the lake islands. Currently, there are 14 young Catholic men involved in Squire activities and Brother McLamb is interested in adding to that number. Requirements for membership are for the young men to be no older than 18 and practicing Catholics. Any Knight who knows of a young man who might be interested in joining the Squires should refer them to Stewart at his e-mail address (stewartm@corencorp.com) or at his home phone 704-902-9456. PRIESTS' APPRECIATION DINNER Plans are being formulated for an August dinner in honor of the priests who serve us here at St. Therese. The date will either be the 13th or 20th. Mikko Red Arrow is chairing the committee and he needs help in all areas. Interested Knights who want to assist can contact Brother Red Arrow at his e-mail address MREDARROW@HOTMAIL.COM. Members will be notified by an e-mail from the Grand Knight concerning the firm date. 2008 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Sir Matt Reilly announced that this year's Council scholarship winners have been chosen and will be notified by mail in August, requesting that they attend the Priests' Appreciation Dinner to receive their awards. ROOM AT THE INN Sir Thomas McGahey of the St. Mark's council gave a presentation on a program to help unmarried, pregnant girls and women. Started in 1994, RATI has served more than 400 women and their children - offering them a haven of safety and a source of hope. Brother McGahey is helping to spearhead a funding drive to build a new RATI home where more women and their children can be helped. He is asking councils throughout the area to make a five-year, $5,000 commitment to help build the new $3,000,000 facility on land donated by Belmont Abbey. The Council has taken the matter under consideration and will discuss the commitment in future meetings. CABARET SHOW As reported in last month's Knightline, Council 7406 will host a cabaret type show on October 17 to which the entire parish will be invited. All Knights are urged to attend this fund-raiser which promises to be a full night's entertainment by professional actors and actresses. Included in the evening's festivities will be a dinner consisting of prime rib, baked potato, salad, Green beans and a dessert. The cost will be $30.00 per person. Dinner will be served at 6 pm, with the entertainment to last one and one half hour. Vince Greco had sign-up sheets for tables of eight at the meeting. The sheets will be available at future meetings. NEW PARISHIONERS' MEETING Brother Steve Baughman asked that members of the Council attend the New Parishioners' Meeting after the noon liturgy on August 10. Refreshments will be served at the meeting that is designed to introduce new parish members to the various service opportunities available to them at St. Therese. Steve noted that a table will be set up for our Council with the goal of having new men of the parish community to join with us in our various activities. Steve asked that members of the Council be at the meeting to help in the discussions of the Council's work. PERSONAL FINANCIAL THOUGHTS Personal investments were discussed during the July business meeting and a number of members noted that they had all lost invested money due to the current economic downturn. Sir Ed Kane (njsp2248@rr.com), our KofC Insurance Field Agent, noted the advantages of having money invested with the Knights. Among those benefits were: a guaranteed return, a current higher than guaranteed return and minimum fees. According to Brother Kane, it is almost impossible to lose money in a KofC investment plan. DRIVING ASSISTANCE Ed Kane is in the preliminary stages of putting together a plan where those Knights who regularly attend meetings can serve as drivers for those Knights who want to attend but can't due to nighttime driving restrictions. Brother Kane is asking all Knights who need a ride to the meetings to contact him (704) 799-9575. Ed will need each person's address and general location. He's also asking Knights who drive to the meetings to contact him with their locations. With this information, Ed hopes to be able to be able to put a program together where driving Knights can help those who'd like to come to meetings, but can't due to nighttime driving restrictions.
