october 2007 newsletterFROM THE GRAND KNIGHT Brothers, it was good to see so many of you at
September’s business meeting. Thank you for taking time out of
your busy schedules to come and enjoy fellowship with your Brother
Knights while helping to build a stronger Council. MEMORIAL MASS On December 9, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the noon liturgy. This Mass will honor our deceased KofC members and the deceased spouses of our members. Our Chaplain, Father Joe, will celebrate the Mass and a reception in the PLC will be held immediately following. Invitations will be sent to all KofC widows and letters will be sent to those brother Knights who have lost their spouses. The Mass will be attended by all 4th Degree Knights in full regalia. Make plans now to attend this Mass with your family as we honor those who have gone on to greater glory. COUNCIL MEMORIALS A resolution to remember each Council member who dies was unanimously accepted during the September business meeting. In the future, a $25 memorial will be made in the deceased member’s name with the money being given to one of the Council’s charities. In addition, the KofC Insurance agent will be charged with the responsibility of working with the family, emphasizing how the Knights can be of assistance and how the Fourth Degree can take part in the funeral if the family wishes. NEW MEMBERS Our Council continues to grow. An exemplification was held during our meeting on September 10 when we welcomed Lou Pensa and Brian Brownwell as First Degree Knights. Lou and Brian join John Boles, James Brannick, Jonathan Busch, John Decaat, James Dotson, Kevin Powers and Joseph Priore as our Council’s new members. LAMB Mark Daly reported that he has 38 cases of Tootsie Rolls in his garage, ready for LAMB distribution the weekends of October 12-14 and 19-21. There are still some volunteer slots open and if you haven’t volunteered for your time contact Brother Daly at restondaly@yahoo.com or call him at 704/987-4316. PUMPKIN PATCH OPEN AGAIN This year’s pumpkins arrive on October 6 and will be on sale that day and all the weekends of October. Prices are not firm, but will probably be $10 and $15. Pumpkin Patch will be in the rear of the church as it was last year, and the Knights will be selling them during the SWAT Bazaar Festival on October 20.
KNIGHTS SERVING THE CHURCH Father Joe presented his "wish list" for the Knights, noting that parts of the rectory and doors of the church needed painting. In addition, the circle in front of the church is badly in need of fresh wood chips and some general cleaning. He also noted that the parking lot needs striping and asked the Council for its help in making his "wish list" a "done list". BLOOD DRIVE Brother Clayton Brown announced that a blood drive would be held on October 20. He requested volunteers to help and noted that with the pumpkin sale and SWAT bazaar going on, we should have no difficulty in meeting our Red Cross quota of 40 pints. Sign up for donating will be after Masses on the 13th and 14th. COUPON BOOKS As one of our primary fund raisers, the discount coupon books are going fairly well, according to Fund Raiser Chief Vince Greco. So far, 4600 books have been sold, meaning $2300 for the Council. It was pointed out that if each family in the parish would buy a book, we would raise over $10,000 to fund our charitable causes. SEMINARIAN ASSISTANCE The Council will continue its tradition of supporting a seminarian. Assistance this year will be given to Richard Worthington who is currently studying at St. Charles Seminary in Wynewood, PA. $500 will be sent to him to cover miscellaneous expenses. OFFICER INSURANCE COVERAGE Various companies have been contacted regarding insurance coverage for the Council officers. Commonly called Directors and Officers insurance, the policy will protect the officers in case of any legal actions against them in carrying out their Council duties. The policy will also provide protection for the Council. BIRTHDAYS OCTOBER
